Protect the Long Arm of Otter Lake from the 500 mv Hydro Corridor
The Issue
The long arm of Big Otter Lake was where my family and I created countless memories – fishing, kayaking, and appreciating the untouched beauty of nature. This pristine lake, nestled in the heart of Ontario, Canada, has been an integral part of our lives and represents not only a cherished natural resource but also a quintessential habitat for diverse wildlife.
Unfortunately, this tranquil paradise is under threat from the proposed hydro corridor from Sudbury to Barrie.. The installation of these lines poses significant risks, including habitat disruption, increased pollution, and potential harm to the local ecosystems that rely on the lake. Studies have shown that the construction of infrastructure projects like hydro transmission lines can severely impact water quality, lead to the loss of natural habitats, and endanger wildlife species through habitat fragmentation and increased human activity. Otter Lake is a lake trout lake which signifies that the water quality is high. In order to maintain this designation there are no further severances allowed, the shoreline is protected , and clear cutting is not permitted. Otter Lake is home to all kinds of wildlife including moose deer and bears , loons, herons, as well as species at risk such as Blandings turtle.
The giant transformers and wires crossing the long arm will depreciate our cottages and damage our enjoyment of the lake. If the hydro lines cut across the long arm of Otter Lake , they will compromise not only the whole lake but particularly the 44 cottages on the long arm of which some are permanent residences and many 4 season dwellings . There is also a resort at the end of the long arm with a main building and 9 cottages which will be severely impacted.
Our goal is to urge local government officials and relevant stakeholders to consider alternative paths or underground solutions that would preserve the integrity of Big Otter Lake. By rerouting these transmission lines or exploring less invasive technologies, we can protect the natural beauty and ecological significance of this area. This is not just about conservation; it is about preserving a way of life for all the wildlife and communities that call Big Otter Lake home, particularly the long arm which is most at risk of this development and its adjoining lake Little Otter Lake .
Let us remind authorities that protecting Big Otter Lake and Little Otter Lake is not just an environmental issue but also an economic one. Tourism and local businesses thrive because of the lake’s natural beauty, contributing significantly to the local economy. The protection of this area is essential for sustaining these economic benefits long-term.
I invite you to join me in this cause. Protecting the long arm of Big Otter Lake from harmful development is a responsibility we share . Your signature can make a significant difference. Please sign this petition to help us protect the long arm of Big Otter Lake and maintain its beauty and tranquility for generations to come. This petition along with an email will be going to the local and provincial government and Hydro One.
Thank you
