The livelihoods of New York’s servers and bartenders are under attack. I need your help to stop it.

State lawmakers’ recent proposal to end New York’s tipping system will put our incomes and jobs at risk. We, the workers, defeated a similar proposal in 2018, and we’re asking legislators to listen to us again. We started and stayed in this industry because of the opportunities it provides, and we don’t want to see that change. Together, we can stop this legislation before it’s too late. ➢   Almost all tipped workers earn well above the minimum wage because of tips. By destroying the current system, our take-home pay will be drastically reduced. Don’t take my word for it that tips will go down: Cornell and the Census Bureau studied this, it’s true.

➢   The tipping system is empowering. It allows us to set our own schedule, and earn great money working less than 40 hours a week. By taking that away, our flexibility will be lost. 

➢   To cover the higher wage costs, businesses will increase prices. Prices at restaurants have already gone up. No one wants to see them go higher.

➢   The tipped wage system inspires exceptional service. Without the motivation of earning tips combined with shorter staffing, the quality of service will decline. Who wants the US to turn into Europe? 

➢   Many small business owners will close their doors. These owners, who already struggle with razor-thin margins, cannot absorb the increased labor costs.
