The Issue

Support in education is a vital legal right of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). We ask our MPs - Richard Quigley and Joe Robertson - to commit to supporting parent carers and children with SEND on the Isle of Wight, by voting to maintain the existing laws and protections vulnerable children with SEND already have.

The current legal framework provides crucial protections and guarantees that must not be compromised. However, there has been alarming discussion around potential changes to this framework that could erode these essential rights.

The legal rights of children and young people with SEND are not mere formalities; they are lifelines that ensure access to appropriate education and support. Any reform process must be transparent and come with a firm pledge that there will be no dilution of these legal entitlements. For my children and many others, the assurance of an inclusive educational environment under the current legal systems is vital in allowing them to thrive and achieve their full potential.

Inclusion in mainstream education must be implemented effectively within the existing legal framework, one that has been carefully constructed to protect and nurture our children. I urge the UK government to think critically about the consequences of altering this framework. We must move forward while preserving the strengths that support our most vulnerable young people. A future for inclusive education that empowers all children should not mean rolling back the essential rights they currently have.

Each child matters and deserves an educational environment that meets their needs. I fear that any erosion of their legal rights could lead us back to a past where many were left behind, and I cannot let that happen.

Please join me in calling on the government to maintain the current legal rights and protections for children with SEND. Sign this petition to safeguard their future and ensure that reforms focus on strengthening, not weakening, their educational rights and opportunities.
