Chilean people are violently restricted on their rights to freedom of expression and protesters have been violently suppressed. Demand the Chilean government to respect and protect the rights of people and demand international and national organisations to investigate human rights violations.

Students and citizens are massively protesting in Chile for addressing many social and environmental problems affecting their country. The reason of their protests is not only the increase of the price of the public transport but especially the fact that Chile is one of the most unequal countries in the world and its social and natural services such as education, health care and water are privatized.

The Chilean government is violently repressing the protests and excessively using force against students and citizens including using tear gas, guns and rifles. Last week the Chilean president had declared the state of emergency, granting the government additional powers to restrict citizens’ freedom of movement and their right to assembly. So far 15 people have been killed in the unrest, 226 people have been wounded (National Human Rights Institute source) and 1,420 have been arrested (NHRI source).

Multiple photos, videos and posts circulating on social media are also speaking about people that have been tortured or that disappeared and women that have been raped. There is no transparency on how arrested people are treated.

Sign this petition to demand that the rights of Chilean people are respected.

• Demand the President of Chile Sebastián Piñera to guarantee the respect for the human rights of protesters and citizens.

Los chilenos están restringidos violentamente en sus derechos a la libertad de expresión y los manifestantes han sido violentamente reprimidos. Exija al gobierno chileno que respete y proteja los derechos de las personas y exija a las organizaciones internacionales y nacionales que investiguen las violaciones de los derechos humanos.

Estudiantes y ciudadanos protestan masivamente en Chile por abordar muchos problemas sociales y ambientales que afectan a su país. La razón de sus protestas no es solo el aumento del precio del transporte público, sino especialmente el hecho de que Chile es uno de los países más desiguales del mundo y sus servicios sociales y naturales, como la educación, la atención médica y el agua, se privatizan.

El gobierno chileno está reprimiendo violentamente las protestas y está utilizando excesivamente la fuerza contra estudiantes y ciudadanos, incluido el uso de gases lacrimógenos, armas y rifles. La semana pasada, el presidente chileno ha declarado el estado de emergencia, otorgando al gobierno poderes adicionales para restringir la libertad de movimiento de los ciudadanos y su derecho de reunión. Múltiples fotos, videos y publicaciones que circulan en las redes sociales también hablan de personas que han sido torturadas o desaparecidas y de mujeres que han sido violadas. No hay transparencia sobre cómo se trata a las personas arrestadas.

Firme esta petición para exigir que se respeten los derechos humanos de los chilenos.

• Exija al presidente de Chile, Sebastián Piñera, de garantir el respeto de los derechos humanos de manifestantes y ciudadanos.

• Exija a las organizaciones internacionales y nacionales que realicen investigaciones efectivas sobre el uso inapropiado de la fuerza u otros abusos de los derechos humanos por parte de la policía, y que garanticen los derechos a la libertad de expresión, asociación y reunión pacífica.
