Protect the dignity and human rights of faithfuls and priests in Catholic Church

The Issue

This petition is made to raise the heinous and inhumane actions of Apostolic administrator, Bishop Bosco Puthur of Major Archdiocese of Ernakulam Angamaly for Syro Malabars in India to the notice of the civilised world. Bishop Bosco Puthur called up the political leaders and used the police force to evict the 21 priests representing the faithfuls and priests of the Archdiocese who were on hunger strike in the bishop’s house against the imposition of new liturgy.

The priests were sleeping when they were assaulted at the early morning hours on Saturday 11th January, 2025. They were kicked and punched by Indian police. Their cassocks were teared. Even a priest above 75 years of age was mishandled. They were dragged through the floor of the bishop's house and thrown out from the building by police on the direction from the bishop. They were refused to use the toilets. All the incidents reminded the inquisition of the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages!

The CCTV footage (see the links for the videos) of the assault was shocking. There was no legal binding for the police action. Major Archbishop of Syro Malabar Abp. Raphael Thattil or Prefect of Dicastery of Eastern Churches, Card. Claudio Gugerotti has not yet condemned the violent incident that happened last week which raises suspicions of their involvement in the brutal attack on priests under their jurisdiction. When the news of the assault broke out, a large number of faithfuls including youth, women, nuns and priests reached out to support the victims.

We, the migrant faithfuls of Ernakulam Angamaly Major Archdiocese,

  1. invite the response from Pope Francis on this grievous incident and demand an independent and direct Papal investigation on the atrocities of Bp. Bosco Puthur and Syro Malabar Synod, without the involvement or interference of the Dicastery of Eastern Churches.
  2. appeal to the National Human Rights Commission of India and to the European Human Rights Commissioner to intervene as people from India and the Vatican were involved in this matter.
  3. request all the Catholics around the globe to condemn this inhumane action of Bp. Bosco Puthur to uphold the dignity and the human rights of the priests and faithfuls in Ernakulam Angamaly Major Archdiocese of Syro Malabar Catholic Church.

Please sign this appeal to support us.
