Protect the bears of Santa Rosa County, Escambia county and Northwest Florida.
The Issue
I grew up in Santa Rosa County, Florida. This isn’t just a place on the map—it’s home. The forests, the wildlife, the quiet beauty of nature here shaped my childhood and who I am today. That’s why this petition is so personal to me. I’ve seen these lands, walked these woods, and I’ve felt the presence of something wild and beautiful—something worth protecting.
The Florida black bears, especially those in Santa Rosa and Escambia counties, are facing an imminent threat. These magnificent creatures have roamed our forests for centuries, embodying the wild spirit of our state. However, proposals for sport hunting and depopulation put their lives at grave risk. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the Florida black bear population was reduced by over 50% in the last century due to habitat loss and hunting. Although conservation efforts have helped their numbers recover slightly, they remain vulnerable, particularly in Northwest Florida.
The FWC often cites "population management" as a reason to reconsider bear hunts. Yet, studies have shown that non-lethal methods, such as public education on securing garbage and creating bear-proof zones, are highly effective in preventing bear-human conflicts. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) supports these methods as sustainable and ethical solutions to wildlife management.
We must push for legislation that permanently bans bear hunting for sport in Santa Rosa and Escambia counties and NW Florida in general. Now & in the future! Let's advocate for increased funding for local wildlife conservation programs, and the development of educational initiatives aimed at promoting coexistence between humans and bears. Protecting our bears is not just about conserving a species; it’s about preserving the natural heritage that defines us. We as a community need to also address the over building and land clearing that is taking place at a rapid rate! Clearing the land is pushing the wildlife into the city, into our streets and neighborhoods! This is causing great dangers for not only the wildlife but drivers as well.
Please join me in urging local and state authorities to take immediate action. Sign this petition to send a clear message that the bears of Santa Rosa and Escambia counties are invaluable and their protection must be prioritized! We are destroying their home to build housing . They are clear cutting everything! Our voices together can help safeguard a future where humans and wildlife thrive side by side. Sign now and stand up for the bears!
