Protect The Avenues neighborhood in Huntsville, TX
The Issue
To the Huntsville City Council:
We, the undersigned residents and community members, respectfully ask the City Council to protect the residential character and quality of life of the historic Avenues neighborhood.
We oppose any zoning reclassification or change in use that would allow a single-family dwelling in this neighborhood to be converted into a fraternity house or other high-occupancy student residence.
The Avenues is a unique residential community made up of families, longtime residents and three churches that contribute to the neighborhood’s character and sense of community. There is also property in this area owned by Huntsville ISD for future use.
Introducing a fraternity house into this setting could significantly change the residential environment through increased occupancy, traffic, parking demands, noise and activity.
We ask the City Council to carefully consider the impact of any proposed change in zoning or property use on the families and churches that make the Avenues their home and community.
We respectfully ask the City Council to preserve the established residential character of the Avenues and not approve a reclassification intended to allow a single-family home to operate as a fraternity house.
We ask the City Council to:
- Protect the established residential character of the Avenues.
- Consider the impact of high-occupancy student housing on surrounding families and churches.
- Ensure that zoning classifications cannot be changed simply to circumvent restrictions applicable to fraternity houses or similar uses.
- Preserve the unique character and sense of community that make the Avenues an important part of Huntsville.
We ask the City Council to listen to the residents and community members who live, worship and invest in this neighborhood.
