The position of Assistant Band Director is absolutely crucial to the Band Program at David Douglas High School. The position teaches or co-teaches the following classes: Jazz I, Percussion Methods, Concert Band, and Symphonic Band. The position offsets the loads of aspiring musicians involved and joining the band program. As of May 2025, the number of students amounts to over 140+ students divided among three classes. The number of students is expected to increase by over 50 students.

If the position is removed, there will no longer be a Percussion Methods class which teaches the basics of being a percussionist. Additionally, there will no longer be a Jazz I class which is integral to developing young musicians and directly leads into our award winning Jazz II group. Without this position, the main band director will have to teach over 190 kids by herself, nearly 90 of those kids will be in one class.

Without the Assistant Band Director position, the overall quality of our band program will go down. New and talented musicians will not have the same opportunity to expand their artistic abilities and one of the main prides of the school will no longer have it's same standing.
