On February 1, 2024, a decision will be made whether or not the anthropology program will continue at UNCG.

I am a passionate advocate for the diverse and inclusive field of anthropology, and it deeply concerns me that the Anthropology program at UNC Greensboro is under threat. This program has been instrumental in shaping minds, fostering cultural understanding, and promoting inclusivity. The potential loss of this program would not only affect current students and faculty but also future generations who deserve to have a chance to major in this enriching field.

Anthropology is more than just a degree; it's an exploration into human societies, cultures, and their development. It provides students with critical thinking skills that are highly valued in various sectors such as business, healthcare, education, law enforcement among others. According to the American Anthropological Association (AAA), anthropology majors have found employment in corporations such as Google and Microsoft due to their unique ability to understand human behavior.

The removal of this program would mean depriving our students of these opportunities. It would also mean losing valuable faculty members who have dedicated their careers towards educating students about different cultures around the world.

We urge the UNC Greensboro’s Chancellor, Franklin D. Gilliam, Provost, Debbie Storrs, and all others involved in making this decision to reconsider their decision on eliminating this vital academic program. By doing so they will be preserving not only an educational pathway but also a means for our society to continue learning about itself through anthropological studies.
