I visited Greenview Aviaries Zoo in Ridgetown, Ontario, excited to take my 1-year-old to the zoo for the very first time. Instead of leaving with happy memories, I left feeling heartbroken and disturbed by the conditions many of the animals appeared to be living in.

Throughout the zoo, I witnessed birds plucking out their own feathers in cages so small they could barely spread their wings. Some animals appeared unable to comfortably move around their enclosures, while others were completely alone and repeatedly pacing — a behavior commonly associated with stress and poor welfare in captive animals. I also noticed feces left sitting in cages, rotten leftover food, dirty black water, and during our visit, there was not a single employee in sight to address these conditions or answer concerns.

When I researched where the animals are kept during the winter months, I discovered that many remain outdoors, including animals that would naturally live in much warmer climates.

No animal deserves to live in neglectful or inhumane conditions. These animals depend entirely on humans for their care, safety, and wellbeing. By speaking up, we can help push for proper investigations, accountability, and better living conditions for these animals.
