The Issue

The Aravalli mountain range, one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world, predating even the majestic Himalayas, holds immense cultural, historical, and environmental significance for India. For centuries, the Aravallis have stood as a testament to the region's rich heritage and have been revered not just as geographical landmarks, but as deities by communities across Rajasthan and other parts of India. As a sacred entity, Aravalli signifies safety and security and occupies a deeply revered position within our religious beliefs.

Despite their crucial ecological and cultural importance, the Aravalli mountains are under severe threat due to illegal deforestation, rampant mining, and unchecked land degradation. The recent Supreme Court ruling allowing a 100-meter clearance around construction sites further jeopardizes this already vulnerable ecosystem. Such activities have led to a significant loss of biodiversity, alteration of natural landscapes, and have threatened the livelihoods of countless communities who depend on the Aravalli’s rich resources.

According to a study by the Centre for Science and Environment, more than 25% of the original forest cover has already been depleted due to illegal activities. The lack of strict enforcement of environmental laws and inadequate penalties for violators exacerbate this crisis. This deforestation not only contributes to climate change by increasing carbon emissions but also impacts the monsoon patterns crucial for India's agrarian economy.

Mining, another major issue plaguing the Aravallis, involves extensive extraction of minerals such as marble and limestone, which leads to habitat destruction, soil erosion, and dust pollution. A report from the Indian Bureau of Mines states that over 350 legally operational quarries in these regions have often expanded their operations illegally, causing irreparable environmental damage.

Our petition demands the immediate formulation and enforcement of stringent environmental regulations that not only curtail such illegal activities but also promote sustainable development practices. A clear framework should be established for monitoring and evaluating environmental damage and holding violators accountable. We urge authorities to revisit the recent Supreme Court ruling and advocate for a more balanced approach that protects these ancient mountains while accommodating developmental needs.

Rescue the Aravalli mountain range before it's too late. Join us in this crucial endeavor to preserve our cultural heritage and safeguard the future of our environment. Please sign this petition to protect the Aravalli mountains from the throes of destruction.
