Protect the Amazon: Demand Deforestation-Free Sugarcane from Nestlé

Protect the Amazon: Demand Deforestation-Free Sugarcane from Nestlé
The Issue
Every day, the Amazon rainforest faces increasing threats of deforestation and is getting closer to its tipping point where it will no longer be able to generate its own rainfall and transform into a dry grassland. This is a global crisis. The Amazon is one of the world’s most vital ecosystems: it is a hotspot for biodiversity, regulates regional climate patterns, and serves as a crucial carbon sink. If we do not act now, more than half of the Amazon may be destroyed by 2050. Its destruction could dramatically accelerate the global climate crisis.
One of the primary drivers of deforestation in Brazil is agribusiness, particularly sugarcane production. Sugarcane is a land and water-intensive crop, and Brazil is the world’s largest producer, accounting for nearly 25% of global production. The expansion of sugarcane plantations is often prioritized over sustainable land-use practices, putting profits above the preservation of the Amazon and the planet’s future.
For years, global corporations have prioritized economic gain over environmental protection, contributing to alarming deforestation rates. We want to see a future where global sugarcane production demand does not place this vital ecosystem at risk, and where the land and the life within is properly stewarded and protected.
We demand that companies like Nestlé exclusively source sugarcane that is deforestation-free and sustainably produced. Such a shift would not only reduce deforestation but also promote regenerative farming practices, protect ecosystems, and help safeguard the livelihoods of local communities.
Bonsucro, an international sustainable sugarcane certification process, has already gained the support of major companies like Lindt & Sprüngli, Mars Wrigley, Ferrero, and Coca-Cola. It’s time for Nestlé to join the movement and show leadership in protecting the Amazon.
Sign our petition today to demand that Nestlé and other major corporations commit to sourcing sustainable, deforestation-free sugarcane. Together, we can protect the Amazon, preserve biodiversity, and help secure a livable future for all.
Your voice matters—let’s hold companies accountable and make a real difference.
