The Issue

In 2024, Missouri voters approved a constitutional amendment protecting the right to an abortion. Now the Missouri General Assembly is asking them to undo it. Amendment 3, on the ballot this November, would reverse that vote and write a near-total abortion ban into the state constitution. The only exceptions would be medical emergencies, fetal anomalies, and cases of rape or incest within the first 12 weeks.

If it passes, no other state's constitution would carry an explicit abortion ban, according to The 19th. Reporting suggests the move could encourage similar efforts in other states where voters have chosen to protect reproductive rights.

Care in Missouri is already hard to reach. Clinics have spent the last two years rebuilding abortion services almost from nothing, and appointments are still scarce. Tiffany, a Springfield mother of three and fourth grade teacher, reached out to four clinics before one could see her, then drove hours across the state for her appointment. Providers say uncertainty over the November vote is making it harder to expand care.

"I think of the constitution as something that's supposed to protect us, and that doesn't feel very protective," Tiffany told The 19th.

Polling from St. Louis University shows voters almost evenly split, with 13 percent still undecided. Every voice counts.

Missourians already made their choice. The Missouri General Assembly should respect the result of the 2024 vote instead of asking voters to take away a right they just approved.

Sign the petition to protect the abortion rights Missouri voters approved — before November's vote takes them away.
