Protect the 1879 Givens Ranch Landscape on Highway 140 in Catheys Valley

The 1879 Givens Ranch Landscape is the embodiment of Catheys Valley's rural and ranching lifestyle, front and center at the crossroads of Catheys Valley along Highway 140 in Mariposa County, one of the gateways into Yosemite National Park. The landscape - including barn, oak woodlands, wetlands, and historic wagon road - is the first scene many notice and remember about Catheys Valley. It is iconic. It represents the history and cultural heritage of the community. It is the most important authentic, visible feature and landmark along Highway 140 in Catheys Valley. (For more photos of this historic landscape, visit our Facebook page.)

The owner is proposing a 26-lot development on this site which would greatly impact and forever change this historic and iconic landscape. The Friends of the Givens Ranch Historic Landscape and Barn would like to work with the owner and Mariposa County on options to protect our Catheys Valley history as represented by this landscape.

If you are familiar with this site, if you have ever driven past it, if it has left a lasting impression on you, and if you would like to see it preserved for future generations to enjoy and cherish, we ask you to please sign this petition.

What we are asking is in line with the Mariposa County General Plan and the Catheys Valley Community Plan:

Section 11.2 of the 2006 Mariposa County General Plan, states as County goals to conserve the natural and scenic resources, and open space lands to protect and enhance the County’s quality of life and character ensuring a viable economy (Goal 11-1), and Conserve and enhance the ecosystems, plant communities, wildlife habitats, and the inherent diversity of both plant and animal species for the recreational, commercial, aesthetic, and basic ecosystems needs (Goal 11-4).

The overriding objective of the Catheys Valley Community Plan, as addressed in section 1.1, is “to preserve the rural and ranching lifestyle and character of the area. The land within Catheys Valley is rural and not to be used for urban scale development….”

There are options to a 26-lot development at this location that might better serve the owner. We ask for the opportunity to explore them.

We, the undersigned, ask the Forbello LLC, the Mariposa County Planning Commission, and the Mariposa County Board of Supervisors to work together to alter the proposed Vallecito subdivision development project to protect historic 1879 Givens Ranch Landscape.
