Protect students with standard security practices

Protect students with standard security practices
The Issue
School shootings are a tragedy that need to be addressed with legislative action that will make an impact. A standard policy must be implemented for all schools to ensure the safety of every student regardless of race, ethnicity, or economic status. With any crime the focus should be on deterrence, making it difficult to quickly execute an action. These school shootings turn tragic because there are few if any barriers or opposition the shooter faces once on school grounds. Below I will outline a plan that I feel and have believed for some time would make the greatest impact.
- All schools should be equipped with metal detectors and one main entry point.
- Doors other than main entry should remain locked from the outside.
- Exterior doors should be fitted with a sensor to detect when opened. These alerts should be handled by school security.
- All campuses should be closed campus for lunch.
- All schools should have a secure lobby for visitors, restricting access to the whole campus.
a. Alternatively a security outpost could be staffed at parking entrance during school hours to serve as a check-in station for all visitors. - The main office should be equipped with a silent alarm similar to banks.
- The silent alarm should trigger a light or announcement in all classrooms.
- School security should be present at the main entry during school hours.
- All class doors should be equipped with a lock to protect students during an active shooter situation.
Our children are not safe under the current status quo. As a parent I know more gun laws will not be the ultimate answer. Children deserve a safe learning environment, and parents require peace of mind. Please write your state representatives, city council, and school boards to let them know the changes needed to protect our children.
