The Issue

Understand the truth

As a student who spends a significant portion of their life in school, I firmly believe that educational institutions should be environments of learning, respect, and personal development, not places where individuality is unnecessarily controlled. Unfortunately, many schools enforce outdated and rigid dress codes that restrict boys' hairstyles, hair length, and personal appearance under the guise of maintaining discipline. Such rules distract from the essence of education, impeding our freedom of expression and reducing our motivation and satisfaction in school.

Boys are often handcuffed by these arbitrary rules, leading to stigmatization and diverting attention from what truly matters, our education and character development. For example, how can hairstyle or hair length affect a student's ability to solve a math problem or write an essay? It doesn't. Evidence shows that schools focusing more on students' appearances rather than their educational engagement achieve no more disciplinary clarity or improvement in academic performance.

Furthermore, girls experience similar dilemmas with makeup and cosmetics. Instead of imposing unnecessary restrictions, schools should embrace opportunities to educate students about personal grooming and cosmetics use, fostering a culture of informed personal choices rather than blanket prohibitions. This education would empower students to make choices that respect their personal dignity and freedom.

Additionally, respecting these personal choices aligns with global conversations about dignity and individual rights. The American Psychological Association and other educational bodies have documented that allowing students autonomy in personal appearance fosters a healthier and more accepting school climate.
