Protect Students and Survivors, Not Reputations: End Greek Life and Demand Accountability
The Issue
How many more students have to be sexually assaulted before we finally do something about it?
Across the country, we're seeing reports of sexual assault, hazing, intimidation, and abuse involving college campuses and fraternities. Cornell University. The University of Chicago. Schools right here in Ohio. And those are only the cases we actually hear about.
Parents warn their children to stay away from fraternity parties. Students warn each other about which houses to avoid. And when something happens, we hear things like, "Well, you went to a frat party. What did you expect?" or "You should've known better."
I'm sorry, WHAT?
Since when did attending a party mean someone was asking to be sexually assaulted? Why are we teaching people to avoid certain places instead of making those places safe?
And here's my biggest question.
If fraternities have such a reputation for being unsafe that we're warning our children to stay away from them, WHY THE FUCK ARE THEY STILL EXISTING?
I'm not saying every fraternity member is a predator. I'm not saying every fraternity is responsible for sexual violence. But I am saying that repeated allegations of assault, hazing, intimidation, and misconduct raise serious questions about the culture and accountability within Greek life.
Our students deserve better than being told to stay away. They deserve to be safe in the first place.
Through We Are The Bear, we're calling for legislation to end social fraternities and sororities, including independent organizations operating outside university recognition. We're also developing the Independent Survivor Advocacy Act to establish independent survivor support, stronger protections, and accountability outside university control.
Ending Greek life won't end sexual assault. We know that. But it is one part of a much bigger conversation about campus safety, institutional responsibility, and how we protect students.
How many more headlines are we going to read before something actually changes?
Survivors deserve better. Our students deserve better.
Protect students. Not reputations.
We Are The Bear. ✊️🖤
