To the students of SRJC, 

It has come to the attention of MEChA de SRJC that Santa Rosa Junior College has decided to suspend the therapist training program for at least one year. This decision was made without input from students who are most affected. 

In the past, this program provided 10-12 therapists who supported students on campus. Starting in Summer 2026, that number will drop to only two full-time therapists, with the possibility of adding just one more. This is a significant reduction in mental health support for students. 

We cannot allow the college to remove a program that has been essential to student well-being. Many students rely on these services because they cannot access mental health care outside of school. As an example, a Latinx survey data showed that 72% of vulnerable students find this especially true.

As a Hispanic-Serving Institution, SRJC has a responsibility to support the communities it serves. Reducing access to mental health care directly impacts students who already face barriers to receiving support.

As MEChA de SRJC, we are calling on the administration to: 

• Continue the therapist training program
• Prioritize student mental health
• Be transparent about decisions
• Include students in the decision-making process

A los estudiantes de SRJC,

MEChA de SRJC ha sido informada de que el Santa Rosa Junior College ha decidido suspender el programa donde estudiantes terapeutas proveen servicios en el colegio por al menos un año. Esta fue decidida sin consultar a los estudiantes, quienes son los más afectados.

En el pasado, este programa tenía entre 10-12 terapeutas que brindaban apoyo a los estudiantes. A partir del verano de 2026, ese número se reducirá a solo 2 terapeutas, con la posibilidad de agregar uno más. Esto representa una reducción significativa en el apoyo de salud mental para los estudiantes.

No podemos permitir que el colegio elimine un programa que ha sido esencial para el bienestar de los estudiantes. Muchos estudiantes dependen de estos servicios porque no tienen acceso a atención de salud mental fuera de la escuela. Por ejemplo, los datos de una encuesta Latinx mostraron que el 72% de los estudiantes vulnerables considera que esto es especialmente cierto.

Como Institución al Servicio de Hispanos, SRJC tiene la responsabilidad de apoyar a las comunidades a las que sirve. Reducir el acceso a la atención de salud mental impacta directamente a los estudiantes que ya enfrentan barreras para recibir apoyo. 

Como MEChA de SRJC, hacemos un llamado a la administración para que: 

• Continue el programa de formación de terapeutas
• Priorice la salud mental estudiantil
• Sea transparente en hacer decisiones
• Incluya a los estudiantes en el proceso de tomar decisiones
