The Issue

For me, stray dogs are more than just animals; they are akin to family. When you witness a family member being treated with cruelty and indifference, it's a feeling beyond tolerance.

In our country, an alarming perspective has surfaced that rapists and criminals receive more protection and safety than the innocent stray dogs roaming our streets. This twisted mentality has driven actions to relocate these dogs to so-called 'invisible shelters' — designated forest areas where they face inevitable death due to starvation. This oversight alienates them from the community they rely on for survival and companionship. Our so-called 'independence' witnessed its 79th commemoration, yet we still fall short in humane treatment towards animals that depend on us.

According to various animal welfare organizations, stray dogs play a crucial role in urban ecosystems by controlling rodent populations and even adapting to complex environmental challenges. Contrarily, by confining them to unfamiliar forests without sustenance, we are endorsing inhumane treatment and disregarding their rights as living beings. The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960 stands as a legal testament to our obligation to protect them - an obligation we are currently failing.

Given India's rich cultural heritage that preaches compassion and respect towards all living entities, our actions must reflect this belief system. Instead of ostracizing stray dogs, we should implement community-wide initiatives to foster coexistence and harmony. Urban animal management policies should include spaying and neutering programs, vaccination drives, and educational campaigns to change negative public perceptions towards these animals.

Without immediate intervention, many strays will continue to suffer, their hopes and trust are placed solely in the hands of compassionate individuals who dare to speak against this injustice. They cannot afford invisibility. They should not be marginalized any longer.

Sign this petition to urge lawmakers, community leaders, and fellow citizens to address this grievous disparity in safety and protection. Let’s demand humane treatment for stray dogs, emphasizing compassion over confinement, and solidarity over separation. Only together can we ensure their rightful place in our world, where every creature’s life is valued and respected. Please join us in this crucial fight for justice and humanity.
