Protect Stillwater Students: Strengthen Security at Stillwater High School
The Issue
To the Stillwater Public Schools Board of Education, Superintendent, and District Leadership: On Thursday, September 24, 2026, a 15-year-old student reportedly brought a handgun onto Stillwater High School property. We are grateful that the situation was discovered before anyone was injured. But we cannot simply be grateful that tragedy was prevented. We must learn from what happened and ask whether
Additional reasonable measures could make Stillwater High School safer. We, the undersigned parents, students, families, staff, alumni, and members of the Stillwater community, respectfully ask Stillwater Public Schools to conduct an immediate and comprehensive review of security at Stillwater High School.
We are asking the district to:
1. Evaluate metal detectors and other weapons-screening technology.
We ask the district to obtain professional information regarding the feasibility, effectiveness, cost, staffing requirements, and practical considerations of implementing weapons-screening technology at Stillwater High School.
2. Review the district’s backpack and student-bag policy.
We ask the district to consider whether backpacks and other nonessential bags should be prohibited inside the school building during the regular school day.
Reasonable exceptions could be established for medical needs, approved athletic and extracurricular activities, and other legitimate circumstances.
3. Conduct a professional security assessment.
We ask the district to work with appropriate school-security professionals and law enforcement to evaluate current procedures and identify additional reasonable measures that could reduce the opportunity for weapons to enter the school.
4. Bring the findings to the public.
We ask the Board to present the findings, costs, benefits, limitations, and recommendations to parents and the Stillwater community and establish a clear timeline for consideration and action.
This petition is not intended to criticize our teachers, administrators, school resource officers, or law enforcement. We recognize and appreciate the people who work every day to protect our students.
This is about asking whether we can do more.
As a community, we have an opportunity to learn from what happened on September 24 and take thoughtful, preventative action.
Our students deserve to learn in an environment where every reasonable measure is being considered to protect them.
We respectfully ask the Stillwater Public Schools Board of Education to listen to the community, evaluate these security measures, and take meaningful action to strengthen safety at Stillwater High School.
Please sign this petition if you believe Stillwater students and staff deserve a thorough, public review of school security and consideration of additional reasonable safety measures.
