Protect St. Tammany's rivers and bayous. Urge Senator Robert Owen to withdraw S.B. 124!
The Issue
April 2025 - State Senator Robert Owen has filed S.B. 124 which will remove protection from many of St. Tammany Parish's Scenic Rivers and Bayous.
This attack on our Protected Scenic Rivers Act doesn't just carry environmental ramifications. It has the potential to harm the residents of St. Tammany Parish as well.
Protected streams can not have loads of sewage dumped into them in the same quantities that unprotected streams can. If you're familiar with St. Tammany's waterways, most are already saturated with effluent and biologicals from poor wastewater treatment. Many developers want to be able to dump high loads of sewage into nearby streams when they develop new subdivisions; the Scenic Rivers Act keeps them from being able to do so.
The list of affected rivers, bayous and sloughs that are currently protected; which his bill repeals are:
- Holmes Bayou - All of that portion of the bayou lying within the boundaries of St. Tammany Parish.
- Bradley Slough (Bayou) - All of that portion of the slough lying within the boundaries of St. Tammany Parish.
- Wilson Slough (Bayou) - All of that portion of the slough lying within the boundaries of St. Tammany Parish.
- Morgan River - From its juncture with the Porters River to its reentry into the West Pearl River.
- Bayou LaCombe - From its head waters to Lake Pontchartrain.
- Bayou Cane - From its head waters to Lake Pontchartrain.
- Tchefuncte River - From the Bogue Falaya River to Louisiana Highway 22, excluding any tributaries thereto, and also from the Highway 22 bridge to Lake Pontchartrain.
- Bayou Chinchuba - From the West Causeway approach south to Lake Pontchartrain.
- Bayou Liberty - From head waters to Lake Pontchartrain.
It's not too late! This bill can be withdrawn!

Let's send a message to Senator Owen that our waterways are not dumping grounds for waste!
