Protect Security Guards: Make Stab-Proof Vests Standard

The Issue

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act, employers must provide measures to protect employees from foreseeable hazards. Given the high risk of stabbing in the security sector, stab-proof vests are a practical, effective, and legally justified requirement. Not providing them constitutes both a breach of duty and a failure to safeguard workers’ rights.

My name is Sonny and I work as a retail security guard. Every day, I put myself between aggressive shoplifters, violent customers, and the staff and shoppers I’m there to protect.

On a daily basis we deal with organised crime groups, petty theft and a multitude of public disorders, I’ve been shouted at, threatened, and attacked, I know colleagues who’ve had knives pulled on them and ones who have dealt with the threat of weapons often.

We face danger simply for doing our jobs typically on minimum wage and yet most of us are not given even the most basic protection: a stab-proof vest.

Across the UK, the numbers are shocking: Retail staff now face over 2,000 incidents of violence and abuse every single day.

Shoplifting has surged to 530,000 offences in England and Wales in just one year.
Knife crime is at epidemic levels, putting frontline staff like us directly in harm’s way.

We are the first line of defence in Britain’s shops. We protect staff, customers, and property. But without protective equipment, we’re left exposed. Too many of us finish shifts mentally exhausted and shaken due to the fear of retaliation and or being attacked throughout the day.

I’m calling for all UK employers to provide stab-proof protective vests for in-house retail security staff as standard. This isn’t too much to ask,  it’s about valuing our lives, our safety, and our families who expect us to come home safe at the end of a shift.

Please sign this petition to show that security staff deserve protection. Together, we can pressure employers and government to act. Protecting us properly protects everyone.

This petition is valid under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974: employers must protect staff from foreseeable risks. Providing stab-proof vests is a practical way to meet their legal duty of care and keep retail security staff safe.
