The issue

The proposed Monaro Rock Quarry would bring long-term quarrying and heavy industrial activity to the Royalla region, close to homes, rural properties and a growing cross-border community.

This petition calls on decision-makers to refuse the proposal, or at the very least subject it to the highest level of scrutiny before any determination is made.

Why people are concerned

• Health and amenity — dust, noise, blasting, vibration and lighting.
• Water — groundwater, surface water, runoff, and long-term water security for households that depend on local supply.
• Traffic and road safety — up to 200 laden truck movements a day on the Monaro Highway corridor and surrounding roads.
• Biodiversity — loss of native vegetation, including critically endangered Box-Gum Woodland, and habitat in a valued rural landscape. Koalas have been recorded within 10km of the proposed quarry site, and the community wants their presence properly assessed before any decision is made.
• Community wellbeing — long-term effects on daily life, local identity and quality of life.
• Public interest — whether the claimed benefit justifies the cost to residents, the environment and the region.

What we are asking

We call on decision-makers to:

• refuse the proposed Monaro Rock Quarry, or require far stronger scrutiny of its impacts
• properly consider water, biodiversity, traffic, amenity and community wellbeing
• give full weight to cumulative and cross-border impacts
• put the public interest first
