The Issue

Over the years, Old Crow Yukon has lost an arena, a skatepark, a baseball field, a soccer field, berry patches and a playground to development.

We, the undersigned, respectfully call upon Vuntut Gwitchin’s Chief and Council to prioritize, protect, and invest in recreational spaces that serve all of our community members—children, youth, adults, and Elders. These spaces are essential for promoting health, wellbeing, connection, and community pride.

We specifically request the following actions:

1. Relocate the new GS shop to the industrial area to preserve valuable central community space for recreation and gathering.

2. Immediately restore the baseball diamond and soccer field beside the school to safe, usable conditions, and discontinue the use of these areas for storage of construction and building materials.

3. Develop the old arena riverfront site into a dedicated, multi-use recreation space—such as a skate park, bike park, arena or other community-chosen facility.

We deeply appreciate the efforts of our construction crews and all those working on the projects that build and improve our community. However, we firmly believe that development must not come at the expense of recreational spaces that are vital for the physical, mental, and social wellbeing of our people.

We also respectfully request that the appropriate budget and resources be allocated to complete the necessary restoration and development work in a timely manner. Recreation spaces are not optional—they are critical infrastructure that support a thriving, healthy community for all ages.

Thank you for your consideration and leadership in supporting spaces that bring our community together.

Let’s thrive!
