Protect Point of the Mountain

The Issue

Geneva Rock has submitted a zoning change to the Draper City Council to mine an additional 72.9 acres of Agricultural lands near Steep Mountain, that separates the Utah and Salt Lake Valleys.

This proposal has several issues including:

Dust, Air Quality & Health Concerns

  • The Point is windy and poorly suited for mining, 56% of days see winds over 25 MPH
  • Silica dust is a known carcinogen when released from a high ridge line it becomes one of the larger health threats to citizens along the Wasatch Front

Decreased Desirability to Live & Work in Draper

  • Homes have had a one mile buffer for 20 years and agricultural land is the most protected land in Draper zoning
  • Studies show home values fall if mines are closer to homes and Draper City earns nothing on gravel production

Please help us stop the expansion of mining on the mountain and putting an end to the dust clouds that affect the Utah Valley and Salt Lake Valley down-winders.  Please provide feedback directly to Draper City as well at this link.

If there is a time and place for everything, now and the Point of the Mountain is neither the time nor the place for more gravel mining. If Geneva is allowed this rezoning request, we will see another 30 years of toxic dust emitted at the worst possible place on the Wasatch Front. Yes we need gravel, but not from there. Other big cities wouldn't dream of allowing more gravel mining in the heart of their fastest growing areas. The attached picture shows the lung of a resident lucky enough to live in a rural area and breath clean air. On the right is the lung of a life time resident of Sydney, Australia, whose air pollution is generally less than that in Salt Lake City's. Need we say more?
