Protect Philippine seas from overfishing
Protect Philippine seas from overfishing
The Issue

Protecting our seas means protecting our future. As someone who grew up along the beautiful coastlines of the Philippines, witnessing the vibrant marine life that thrived in our waters, I cannot stand by as these precious ecosystems are threatened by overfishing. Our seas, which have provided sustenance and livelihood for generations, now face devastation if we do not act urgently to curb overfishing.
Let us not forget the richness of the Philippines’ marine biodiversity. Known as the "Amazon of the Seas," the diverse marine species found in our waters are a source of national pride. However, currently, more than 10% of the world’s reef fish are found in Philippine waters, many of which are now at risk due to unsustainable fishing practices. The health of these marine ecosystems is crucial not only for maintaining biodiversity but also for the economic resilience of communities depending on fishing for their livelihoods.
Overfishing not only threatens marine life but also compromises food security for millions of Filipinos. Unsustainable fishing practices can deplete fish populations, making it difficult for local communities to sustain themselves. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, over 70% of the Philippine’s 13 major fishing grounds are already overfished. This is alarming and requires immediate action.
We call on the Philippine government to enforce stricter regulations on fishing practices, including the implementation of quotas, protection of marine sanctuaries, and enhanced monitoring and patrolling of our waters to deter illegal fishing activities. It's critical to work with local communities, NGOs, and other stakeholders to promote sustainable fishing initiatives and provide alternative livelihoods for those affected by necessary restrictions.
Let’s work together to ensure the preservation of our marine resources. By protecting our seas, we are ensuring a future where marine species continue to flourish and where future generations can enjoy and benefit from the ocean’s bounty. Please sign this petition to urge swift government action and save our seas from overfishing.
