America’s housing crisis is becoming an animal welfare crisis. Families are being forced to surrender, abandon, or rehome beloved pets due to restrictive housing policies, sudden lease changes, excessive pet fees, and a severe lack of pet-friendly housing. As shelters and rescues continue to overflow, more animals are ending up homeless through no fault of their own. Many families desperately try to find help but run out of time, resources, and options. Pets are family. Housing policies should not contribute to abandonment, overcrowded shelters, or emotional trauma for families and animals. We are calling for stronger housing protections for pet owners, increased access to pet-friendly housing, fair pet policies, and community support resources that help keep pets safely with the families who love them.
