Protect People Who Feed and Care for Stray Dogs from Harassment

Protect People Who Feed and Care for Stray Dogs from Harassment
The Issue
My name is Reemma Dalal and I feed and care for a stray dog in my area. I never imagined that a simple act of kindness would turn into a source of stress, trauma, and public humiliation. I’ve faced intense aggression — from people in the park yelling at me to walk away, to being sent a legal notice accusing me of “training dogs to bite.” The same notice went on to make vile, false claims about my behavior with the dog, including absurd and offensive allegations.
It broke me. But it also opened my eyes — because this is not just happening to me.
Every day, countless dog feeders across the country are going through the same thing. We’re harassed, insulted, filmed without consent, threatened with legal action, and even assaulted — just for feeding hungry animals. We’re made to feel like criminals for caring.
We are not criminals. We are volunteers, caregivers, and animal lovers doing what’s right — supported by the Animal Welfare Board of India and protected by the Constitution and the Supreme Court. Feeding animals is legal. Compassion is not a crime.
We, the dog feeders of this country, demand:
1. Legal protection from harassment, verbal abuse, and false allegations
2. Strict action against individuals who file fake complaints or spread defamatory claims
3. Awareness drives to educate the public on animal welfare laws and the legality of feeding strays
4. Support systems — including helplines and local mediation channels — for feeders in distress
5. Recognition and respect for the work we do, often silently and at personal cost
We are not asking for much — only to be treated with basic dignity while we care for the voiceless. Please sign this petition to support not just me, but all of us who feed stray dogs and face daily aggression for choosing kindness.
