Protect People from Online Scams: Strengthen Security and Awareness Now
The Issue
Online scams are hurting more people than ever, especially young adults. In 2024, $1.03 trillion was lost due to scams worldwide. These scams come in many forms, like fake emails, fake job offers, and online shopping tricks. It’s not just about losing money but more about how scams make people feel scared, frustrated, and unsure if they can trust the internet.
Scammers are getting better at tricking people, using social media and smart technology to steal even more. If we don’t act, things will only get worse. Governments, companies, and everyone else must work together to fight scams and make the internet a safer place for everyone.
If no action is taken, more people will keep losing their savings, and businesses will struggle to protect customers. Shopping and banking will continue to get riskier, which will lead to people being afraid to use them. If we act now, we can make websites safer to use, teach people how to spot scams and create stronger laws to stop scammers and create an overall safer environment.
We are also advocating for the introduction of a bill that would establish a publicly accessible scam reporting database. This system would allow individuals and businesses to report scams they encounter, helping others avoid fraud and improving overall safety online. We believe this bill could be a critical step in the fight against online scams.
