The Issue

Every year, during the festive seasons and on special occasions, the skies of Slater Park Pawtucket light up with the bright and loud spectacle of fireworks. While these displays excite our community, they inflict significant distress on the vulnerable animals housed at the Pawtucket Animal Shelter. It is a heartbreaking and terrifying reality for these animals whose acute hearing and sensitivity make the experiences of loud noises immensely traumatic.

The physiological toll these pets endure is profound. The sudden bursts of noise result in extreme panic, causing heart rate spikes and leading some animals to self-injure in their frantic attempts to escape the perceived danger. Over time, the repeated exposure leads to severe psychological trauma, manifesting in behavioral changes and an increased difficulty in finding these animals their forever homes.

We urge the City of Pawtucket, the Mayor's office, and the City Council to take immediate and effective measures to mitigate the impact of fireworks on these defenseless animals. We propose specific solutions such as designating noise-free zones around the shelter, implementing a curfew on fireworks use, and coordinating with event organizers to ensure considerate planning that takes into account the presence of animal shelters and other sensitive areas.

Further, investing in soundproofing materials for the shelter and raising public awareness about the detrimental effects of fireworks on animals could contribute substantially to alleviating this problem. Community engagement and cooperative efforts can significantly enhance the safety and well-being of our shelter pets.

Verifiable data supports the need for this action. Studies show that animals can experience severe stress-related conditions due to loud noises, and similar initiatives in other cities have proven effective. We urge our community leaders to take a compassionate stand and protect the animals who have no voice of their own.

Please sign this petition to show your support for protecting our shelter animals from the harmful effects of fireworks. Together, we can create a safer and more humane environment for all of Pawtucket's residents. Pawtucket’ sheltered pets deserve better.
