Keep Criminal Record Checks Strong for Taxi Drivers in Inverclyde.

We are calling on Inverclyde Council to suspend its current review process and continue applying existing criminal record check standards for all taxi driver licence applications.

The change in checks could see unvetted males obtaining taxi licences, and, transporting passengers without their criminal backgrounds outside of the UK, ever being known or verified.

Lowering or bypassing these checks for any applicant, including those born outside the UK where full background verification may not be possible, creates unnecessary risk. Public safety should never depend on incomplete or unverifiable information.

We believe that no taxi licence should be granted unless a person’s criminal background can be fully and reliably checked, regardless of nationality or place of birth. This is not about exclusion. It is about protection.

Everyone in Inverclyde deserves to step into a taxi feeling safe and confident.
