These forests also play a crucial role in regulating the global climate by absorbing carbon dioxide.

However, large-scale deforestation driven by logging, mining, and agricultural expansion threatens this unique ecosystem. According to Global Forest Watch, Papua lost approximately 1 million hectares of tree cover between 2001 and 2019.
