Protect our Wahine Act (Enforce Arrest and cease Weapons Cases of Domestic Violence
The Issue
This petition is born out of a personal tragedy. My Great friend was tragically killed in a murder-suicide, just days after she had obtained a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) against her abuser. Her abuser was also ordered to surrender all weapons Despite the order, her abuser kept his weapons and ultimately used them to end her life on New Year's Day. Even after the Death threats no Arrest was made.
This story is not unique. Every year, thousands of women are victims of domestic violence. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 1 in 4 women have been victims of severe physical violence by an intimate partner during their lifetime. Yet, despite these alarming statistics and the clear danger posed by abusers with access to weapons, immediate arrests and weapon seizures are not always enforced when TROs are issued.
We demand that law enforcement agencies take immediate action when women call for help or obtain TROs against their abusers. Arrests must be made as soon as possible to ensure the safety of these vulnerable individuals. Additionally, any weapons owned by the accused must be seized immediately upon issuance of a TRO.
Our homes should be our safe havens - places where we feel secure and protected from harm - but for many women facing domestic abuse this is not the case. Let's work together to change this reality and ensure that no more lives are lost due to delayed response or lax enforcement.
Please sign this petition today; urge lawmakers and law enforcement agencies across our nation to enforce immediate arrests and weapon seizures in cases involving domestic violence allegations or TRO issuances.
