The Issue

The future of our trees and green spaces is being affected by rapid development in Halifax!

Halifax already has the unfortunate status of being identified as a “heat island”. This means our city is experiencing higher temperatures because our natural landscapes, like our trees and green spaces, are being rapidly replaced with buildings and roads that retain heat, reduce air quality, increase our reliance on air conditioning, promote heat related illnesses, and destroy the habitat that is essential for healthy living by both humans and wildlife.

Mature trees and green spaces in our urban core offer life-saving shade, carbon sequestration, air quality improvement, essential wildlife habitat, healthy living environments, and natural stormwater treatment that combat the heat island effects of rising temperatures.

Recent changes to city zoning allows development to be fast tracked without sufficient consultation or consideration for the protection of trees and green spaces during construction. Losses can add up quickly!

A group of concerned citizens, BRIA (Beaufort, Bellevue, Regina Terrace, Richie, Inglis and area), have come together to protect a stand of mature Beech trees (at the corner of Beaufort Avenue and Regina Terrace) from being destroyed by the first of many developments that have been fast tracked under the new zoning changes. These hardwood trees are estimated to be more than 125 years old and reside on public green space adjacent to a construction site.

We ask you to join BRIA’s efforts to raise the profile of Halifax’s trees and greenspaces.

By signing this petition, you are joining our effort to call on the Halifax City Council to declare Halifax’s trees and green spaces as Vital City Infrastructure that must be strictly protected during all phases of planning and development in our growing city.
