The Issue

I am a concerned parent with two teenage sons attending Tecumseh High School. Since the year 2000, our high school has been plagued with over eight bomb threats and numerous school shooting threats. The recent chilling incident involved a student who made a public threat over a month ago, stating his intention to bring a firearm to school with the intent to shoot everyone. Shockingly, despite this threat, the student was not immediately apprehended. Over the following month, this individual was allowed to attend school, and disturbing images surfaced of him in the boys' bathroom with guns and knives.

It’s time for serious changes to ensure the safety of all students. We need the urgent installation of metal detectors at Tecumseh High School as a proactive measure to prevent any weapons from entering the premises. Additionally, an increased security presence and mandatory searches are necessary. Zero Tolerance must mean exactly that – absolute zero tolerance for bullying, threats, and violence.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in the 2019-2020 school year alone, 70% of public schools reported at least one violent incident. Measures like metal detectors and strict security protocols have shown to reduce incidents of violence in schools significantly.

Protecting our children should be our top priority. We cannot afford to wait for an actual tragedy to occur before taking action. It's not just about reacting to threats but preventing them with firm and straightforward policies that are consistently enforced.

Join me in urging the Tecumseh School District to prioritize the safety of our children by implementing these critical safety measures. Sign the petition to demand immediate action. Let's make our schools a safe environment for learning, free from fear and intimidation.
