The Issue

We, the undersigned residents of New Mexico and supporters nationwide, respectfully urge our U.S. Senators and Representative to oppose the Budget Reconciliation bill—nicknamed the “Big Beautiful Bill”—which mandates the forced sale of 2–3 million acres of national Forest and BLM land across western states, including over 14 million acres here in New Mexico.

These lands include forested slopes, wildlife habitats, and open space in places including the Sandia Mountains, Gila National Forest, and the area currently threatened by the Trout Fire in Silver City. A sale could lead to oil/gas infrastructure, gated developments, or restricted access to what is now public land.

We ask that our federal leaders remove all land-sale provisions, safeguard New Mexico’s public lands, and bring this petition with them to the June 23 meeting in Santa Fe with Secretary Burgum.

Commitments for signers (list)

- I oppose the sale of public lands that are vital to local culture, recreation, and the natural heritage.
- I support thoughtful, community-informed development that protects our most cherished public spaces.
- I urge lawmakers to protect public the Gila and keep its future in public hands.
