Protect Our Pigeons: Demand USPS Reform for Safe and Humane Live‑Animal Shipping

Protect Our Pigeons: Demand USPS Reform for Safe and Humane Live‑Animal Shipping
The Issue
For generations, pigeon flyers, breeders, and hobbyists across the United States have relied on the United States Postal Service as the only legal and accessible way to ship live pigeons. Our community has always worked within USPS rules, using approved containers and following every regulation designed to keep birds safe.
But today, USPS service has deteriorated to a crisis point.
Shipping costs continue to rise while delivery times grow longer and more unpredictable. Many of us are experiencing extreme delays — with some birds spending more than 10 days in transit. Because USPS prohibits food and water inside approved shipping boxes, these delays place live animals in dangerous, inhumane conditions. Birds are arriving exhausted, dehydrated, injured, or in some cases deceased.
This is not simply poor service.
This is an animal‑welfare emergency.
We, the undersigned members of the U.S. pigeon‑flying and breeding community, respectfully call on:
• The President of the United States
• The Postmaster General of the United States
to take immediate action to address the failures in USPS live‑animal shipping.
We request:
A full review of USPS live‑animal handling and routing procedures
• Investigation into repeated extreme delays causing animal suffering
• Structural reforms to ensure accountability and reliability
• Consideration of privatization, partial privatization, or allowing private carriers to legally transport live birds
• Clear delivery‑time standards for all live‑animal shipments
We are not asking for special treatment.
We are asking for a humane, functional, dependable system that does not endanger the animals entrusted to it.
Our community has relied on the USPS for decades. We want to continue doing so — but not at the cost of animal welfare.
By signing this petition, you are standing up for humane treatment, responsible service, and the protection of a long‑standing American hobby and tradition.
It’s time for meaningful reform. Our birds deserve better.
