Protect our pets paws—Change to pet-friendly salt in the winter

Protect our pets paws—Change to pet-friendly salt in the winter
The Issue
The residents of Bellows Falls, are deeply committed to the safety and well-being of our pets, children, wildlife, and the environment. During the winter months, while road salt and de-icing products are essential for maintaining safe sidewalks and roads, many traditional salts pose significant risks to both animals and people. It is time for our town to adopt pet-friendly, eco-conscious alternatives that prioritize the health and safety of our entire community.
Not all residents have access to private yards, necessitating the use of public sidewalks and streets for walking pets. Traditional road salts can cause painful burns and irritation to pets paws, and if ingested during grooming, can lead to toxic reactions. Ingesting rock salt can result in symptoms ranging from excessive thirst and drooling to vomiting and even seizures in severe cases. Switching to pet-friendly salt would allow all pet owners to walk their animals safely throughout town without fear of harm.
The dangers of traditional road salts extend beyond pets. Children playing in the snow may come into contact with these chemicals, which can irritate skin, harm eyes, and, if accidentally ingested, pose serious health risks. By adopting pet-friendly de-icing products, we can create a safer environment for our youngest residents, ensuring that our public spaces remain family-friendly during the winter months.
This initiative aligns with Vermonts longstanding commitment to environmental preservation and wildlife safety. Traditional road salts can harm our local waterways, soil, and plants, disrupting the natural balance of our cherished ecosystems. In 2022, seven streams in Vermont were considered impaired by high chloride concentrations, according to environmental regulators. By choosing environmentally friendly alternatives, we can reduce our towns ecological footprint and uphold Vermonts values of protecting wildlife and promoting sustainability.
We urge the town leaders in Bellows Falls to adopt pet-friendly road salt for this winter and beyond. This change will help protect pets, children, and the environment while reinforcing Vermonts reputation as a state that prioritizes outdoor enjoyment and ecological responsibility. Please join us in supporting this important initiative by signing this petition. Together, we can create a safer, healthier, and more inclusive community for all.
