On Tuesday evening, Senator Stirling Griff stood up in the Australian Senate and introduced the report we have all been waiting for: “Regulatory approaches to ensure the safety of pet food”.

Now, the report is finally here... and it’s good news.

There are seven recommendations in total to fix the inadequate system, including:

  • Mandatory regulation
  • Mandatory labelling of ingredients
  • Better recall processes
  • Treating pet food in the same way as human food

This is exactly what we have been calling for.

It’s too late to bring back Vincent or to stop Mabel from suffering from her debilitating megaesophagus, or all the other pets that have died and are still suffering from this condition. But it’s not too late to stop this happening to other beloved pets and pet owners. However, we need to make sure these recommendations become the law, and quick.

We’ve already seen that the pet food industry can’t be trusted to move quickly and responsibly, so we need Canberra to make these changes as soon as possible. Until they do, pets are still at risk.

So please, keep sharing this petition. We won’t stop until these changes are made.

Nearly 94,000 of you have supported our journey, which started when we lost our beautiful Vincent. We went all the way to Parliament House, anxious to ensure that Australia finally has a regulated pet food industry so that the tragedy that happened in our household doesn’t happen again.

Yesterday, Senator Griff thanks pet lovers like you for making this change possible. Thank you for staying with us on this journey, for sharing your stories with us, and for making submissions to the Senate committee.

Christine & Peter Fry.
