The Issue

To: Local Government Officials, City Planners, and Decision-Makers

We, the Bay Lake Ranch residents, surrounding communities, and concerned citizens, are writing to express our strong opposition to the proposed road developments (Sunbridge Parkway Extension & SR 515 Northeast Connector Expressway) behind our neighborhood, which is currently a protected preservation area. We believe that this project will have significant negative impacts on the health, safety, and well-being of our community, as well as the environment we cherish.

We urge decision-makers to reconsider this development placement and instead prioritize the preservation of our neighborhood and its surrounding environment.

The following are the key concerns we wish to address:

1. Health and Safety Concerns

The proposed road will result in increased traffic, which poses significant health risks due to air pollution, noise pollution, and the increased risk of accidents. The close proximity of the road to our homes will affect residents, particularly children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. We are concerned about the potential for respiratory issues, cardiovascular problems, and the general decline in quality of life due to a heightened safety risk for pedestrians and drivers alike. There are also major concerns about exacerbating flood risk and increased sitting water on our properties due to the displacement of the water as a result of the construction of the roads.

2. Environmental Disruption

The area behind our neighborhood is a natural preservation zone that provides habitat for local wildlife, supports biodiversity, and contributes to the overall environmental health of our community. This development threatens to destroy or severely damage this critical ecosystem. The increased traffic and construction activity will contribute to air and soil pollution, light pollution, disruption of wildlife habitats, and potential degradation of local water quality. We believe that preserving this natural space is crucial for the health of both our community and the broader ecosystem.

Currently, due to the recent development in our area we’ve already seen a loss of habitat for wildlife in the area and these roads will compound the issue. Coyotes, bobcats, and panthers are already foraging in the neighborhood on pets and farm animals, especially chickens, due to the loss of habitat to sustain them. It’s heartbreaking to witness.

3. Decreased Quality of Life

This development will introduce constant noise, dust, and traffic congestion that will significantly detract from the peaceful and serene environment that our neighborhood currently enjoys. Our community values its quiet residential atmosphere, and this project threatens to transform our homes into a less desirable place to live, creating a permanent source of distress and discomfort for residents. Many of us moved here with the hope of living amidst nature, enjoying the harmony of a serene life away from the hustle and bustle. The road construction will disrupt this balance we strived so hard to achieve.

4. Loss of Privacy

The new road will be in close proximity to our homes, resulting in a severe loss of privacy. We will be exposed to the constant presence of traffic and road users, disrupting the sense of safety and comfort that many of us currently enjoy in our backyards and living spaces. It is projected that one of the roads will bring an added presence of a maximum of 40K cars daily, minimizing privacy and adding severe congestion, bottlenecking our neighborhood in during high traffic hours.

5. Reduced Property Value

The proposed road development will likely decrease property values in our neighborhood due to increased noise, decreased privacy, and the overall negative impact on the quality of living. Many homeowners who have invested in this community will suffer financial loss as a result of this development.

6. Community Displacement

There is a risk that some residents may be forced to relocate due to the negative impacts of the road development. Families and individuals who have made this neighborhood their home for years, some over 38 years, may find it increasingly difficult to live here due to the environmental and quality-of-life factors mentioned above. This project threatens to disrupt the cohesion and stability of our community. We fear the road intrusion will lead to property acquisition or even eminent domain, and skyrocketing taxes, causing community displacement.

7. Legal and Financial Costs

In addition to the environmental and social costs, this development will require significant public funds, potentially diverting resources away from more pressing community needs in our area. There will also be legal expenses related to the approval process, appeals, and potential future litigation. These financial burdens should be carefully weighed against the long-term consequences of the proposed project.

Our Request:

We strongly urge the local government and planning authorities to:

Reevaluate the necessity of this road development project in the current location proposed and its long-term impacts on our already established community.
Explore alternative solutions that will reduce the negative impacts on health, safety, privacy, property value, and the environment.
Engage in further consultation with neighborhood residents to ensure that their voices are heard and taken into account in the decision-making process.
We call for a comprehensive environmental impact assessment and a transparent review process that includes community input and considers the broader consequences of this project behind our neighborhood. It is essential that our voices are heard, and our concerns are addressed before any further steps are taken.

We invite the community to sign this petition and stand with us in opposition to the proposed road construction location. Share our story and help us preserve the peace and tranquility of Bay Lake Ranch and our surrounding communities.

We, the undersigned, stand united in our commitment to protecting our neighborhood and its future.
