The Issue

On October 14th, at 6:00 PM, a significant town hall meeting will convene in downtown Kite, touching on a subject that impacts us all: the proposed utility-scale solar farm in our district. While the town hall is taking place in Kite—the central heart and incorporated hub of District 4—the proposed solar project itself is located on the north end of our county, stretching between New Home Road and Wrightsville, from South Pringle Road to Highway 319. It’s not just about clean energy; it's about the transformation of our landscapes, livelihoods, and future.

I am calling upon neighbors, friends, and fellow residents of Johnson County because this proposal can profoundly reshape our community’s agricultural heritage. The removal of hundreds of acres currently devoted to agriculture and timber will not only strip away opportunities for farming income but also permanently alter our rural ethos. The land that has sustained generations will be irreversibly changed; this is a pivotal moment.

The environmental complications associated with this development also raise significant alarm. Extensive clearing and grading required for the solar farm construction may cause topsoil erosion and disrupt our natural drainage systems, leading to potential stormwater runoff issues. These ecological shifts are not merely hypothetical—they carry real risks of disrupting local wildlife habitats vital to our regional biodiversity.

Moreover, the proposed solar arrays present considerable visual repercussions, changing the rural scenery that defines our community’s identity. With the lifecycle of industrial solar panels, we must also consider the pressing issue of long-term solar waste management, a challenge yet to be decisively addressed.

Though Johnson County has set forth comprehensive building codes requiring full compliance before any construction permits are granted, and while the Board of Commissioners retains a neutral stance concerning business developments, this is our chance to assert our voices. It is crucial for the future of our environment, economy, and the preservation of our community character that residents gather, organize, and present these critical questions and concerns. Local food will also be catered by The Kite Cafe as we gather as a community.

Join us in calling for transparency and responsible development. Let’s ensure our leaders understand the full scope of this project’s impact, preserving Johnson County’s precious resources for future generations. Sign this petition to protect our shared home and heritage.
