Following an attack by an alleged group of youths, 1 male swan has been killed. This is not simply upsetting for those who witnessed or discovered what happened — it has devastated a family of wildlife and left our community deeply concerned about what could happen next.

Our lake should be a safe place for wildlife and for the people who visit it.

Swans and other birds living on the lake are vulnerable and unable to protect themselves from deliberate acts of cruelty. Without adequate monitoring, incidents can happen without witnesses or sufficient evidence to identify those responsible.

We are asking for CCTV to be installed at appropriate points around the lake.

The purpose is not to intrude on the local community. It is to:

* Deter further acts of cruelty and vandalism.
* Protect swans and other vulnerable wildlife.
* Provide evidence if criminal or antisocial behaviour occurs.
* Help identify those responsible for future incidents.
* Give local residents reassurance that the area is being monitored.
* Help preserve the lake as a safe and welcoming environment for both wildlife and the community.

We believe preventative action must now be taken.
