Protect Our Kids: Install a Crossing Guard at Grand & Aliso Viejo Pkwy

Protect Our Kids: Install a Crossing Guard at Grand & Aliso Viejo Pkwy
The Issue
Every day, hundreds of students at Don Juan Avila Elementary, Don Juan Avila Middle, and Oak Grove Elementary are forced to play a dangerous game of "human frogger."
We are calling on the City of Aliso Viejo and the Capistrano Unified School District to please assign a crossing guard to the intersection of Grand Avenue and Aliso Viejo Parkway.
The Reality of the Intersection
This isn't just a street; it is a high-speed, six-lane thoroughfare. During peak school hours, it becomes a chaotic bottleneck of distracted commuters, rushing parents, and heavy transit.
--Vulnerable Pedestrians: Children as young as five years old are navigating this massive crossing. Even middle schoolers lack the developmental "gap-judgment" to safely gauge the speed of a car traveling 45+ mph.
--Zero Margin for Error: With early sunsets in the winter and morning fog, visibility is often dangerously low. A single distracted driver is all it takes for a tragedy to occur.
--A "High-Risk" Zone: This intersection serves three different schools. The volume of foot traffic combined with six lanes of vehicle traffic makes this one of the most hazardous crossings in our community.
Safety is Not Optional
A crossing guard is the most effective, low-cost solution to save lives. Their presence does more than just stop traffic; it provides visible authority that forces drivers to slow down and pay attention.
By signing this petition, you are supporting:
- The immediate placement of a trained crossing guard during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up.
- A formal traffic safety reassessment of the Grand and Aliso Viejo Parkway intersection.
- Prioritization of student lives over commuter convenience.
Our children’s walk to school should not be a life-threatening event. We urge the City Council to act before an accident happens—not after.
Sign now to protect our students.
