Every day, my family navigates the perilous intersection at Canaveral Groves Blvd and Grissom Pkwy in Cocoa. As a concerned resident, I am calling for immediate action to address the urgent need for a left turn light for east to west traffic at this location. The dramatic increase in traffic over recent years has heightened the risk of accidents, injuries, and even fatalities, making this change crucial for the safety of families and commuters alike.

This intersection has become notorious for its hazards, with numerous accidents occurring due to the lack of a dedicated left turn light. The impact is felt deeply within our community, with many worried about the safety of their loved ones each time they pass through. My personal fear is for my wife and children, who risk their lives just driving to and from work each day. It is only a matter of time before the next devastating incident without proper intervention.

Statistics reveal that intersections with protected left turn signals significantly reduce the likelihood of collisions. According to the Federal Highway Administration, left-turn signals can reduce intersection crashes by up to 45%. Given this evidence and the recurring danger at Canaveral Groves Blvd and Grissom Pkwy, it is evident that Brevard County must act swiftly to implement this life-saving measure. I was given a 3.5 year timeline by Brevard County Traffic Operations to address this issue (without even a commitment that it would be done) and that timeline would put many of our families and residents at further risk of injury or death. Not to mention that we will continue to see even more traffic going through this intersection with the addition of more industrial and residential growth, as well as the potential rail line station.

Safety cannot wait. With every additional day without change, we gamble with the lives of residents and travelers. We need Brevard County officials to prioritize this issue, and I urge them to take immediate action by installing a left turn light at this intersection.
