Protect our Deer

Protect our Deer
The Issue
SPEED KILLS – Southport’s deer population is suffering from vehicular impacts!
We know of at least three deer being hit in the Southport area last week alone.
The velocity of a car etc hitting a deer, fox, hedgehog, hare, or any other form of British wildlife is massive and lethal. More speed equates with more injury and death. That is simply common logic.
Therefore, if anyone is honestly serious about saving these magnificent creatures then first, they must address the excess speed problem.
It is important to realise that this is not just about animals - it's a safely issue for humans as well. A large animal suddenly leaping out in front of a car can potentially create a serious accident.
Bringing speed limits down will significantly save lives and have a positive effect on our precious UK wildlife. Roadside barriers/fencing may also be effective. The current speed limits are ensuring that more animals die each year.
Of course 'any' speed limit will be ignored by the 'hard of thinking' ones, who seem to think they are Vin Diesel. Only proper enforcement will deal with idiot drivers who put the rest of us at risk by their selfish antics on the road.
Police and Council Authorities must implement and enforce lower speed limits within zones, where deer are known to cross busy roads, like our coastal roadway through Southport.
More deer road warning signage may help too, like the ones implemented by Ainsdale's Councillor Lynne Thompson along the Coastal Road.
Only legal speed enforcement and stiffer penalties against these dangerous drivers will help herein.
Remember too that it could be a human and not an animal that gets hit.
Give these poor frightened animals (and us humans) a chance. Drive with caution and slow down now!
