Protect our community space in Whitley
The Issue
For years, our Whitley community has benefitted immensely from the tireless efforts of a local resident who has dedicated his time and energy to the communal area here. As someone who shares care of three children, including a child with cerebral palsy, accessibility and safety are not just abstract concepts—they are daily essentials. His involvement goes well beyond mere maintenance; he creates a safe and welcoming environment for families, seniors, and every community member.
Yet, Reading Borough Council's current approach jeopardizes the future of this much-loved communal space and risks marginalizing the contributions of individuals who make our community thrive. This is not just about preserving a garden. It's about valuing family life, prioritizing accessibility, and promoting safety for everyone in our community. It's about recognizing pride in where we live and showing that it matters.
Our community space has been a sanctuary for the elderly, a safe playground for children, and a gathering spot for families. It has been cared for selflessly by a resident who understands the meaning of community spirit. His dedication helps elderly residents navigate the area safely, assists families by providing a nurturing space for their children, and supports the community at large by offering his time and efforts to ensure the space remains accessible and welcoming.
Recent council decisions threaten not only the physical space but also disregard the value of community-driven initiatives. We urge Reading Borough Council to actively engage with us to find solutions that support our community leader’s efforts and preserve this vital area. We call on the Council to:
- Improve safety measures to ensure barrier-free access for all, particularly for those with disabilities.
- Collaborate with residents, valuing their input and experiences, in any developments or maintenance plans.
- Implement housing adaptations to support families with specific needs, ensuring everyone can access their homes safely.
- Conduct a full safety audit to eliminate trip hazards and other dangers that compromise the area.
