Protect our Children: Stop the Stanwell Park Preschool Tender
The issue
As a local resident with two children attending Stanwell Park Preschool, I see firsthand the impact this wonderful place has on our community. My children are thriving in an environment that emphasises outdoor play, environmental education, respect for the land and a flourishing indigenous education program - values that embody the Illawarra community spirit.
Recently, Wollongong Council announced plans to tender the lease of the premises, inviting takeover by a large childcare organisation that puts profits over people. Whilst the current centre is a for-profit entity, it is operated by local educators who are deeply embedded in the community and committed to children’s wellbeing and local values.
Understandably many local residents are concerned. Recent media reports have highlighted the shortcomings in childcare - stories of abuse and neglect of children, and the risks that arise when a childcare is treated primarily as a business. These stories are a timely reminder of how important it is to look after our local centres.
This is not the first time our community has experienced the consequences of Wollongong Council decisions that overlooked local voices. Many will recall the glory days of Stanwell Park Kiosk, once a vibrant community hub where locals would gather regularly. Following the departure of its much loved owners, council awarded a tender to a large external catering company with no connection to the community. The kiosk is now closed and the community is much worse for it.
We cannot allow the same to happen to our preschool.
The educators at the current preschool are not only qualified and experienced, the are our neighbours and friends. They know our children by name, teach them to care for the natural world and values that extend beyond the classroom. The centre consistently exceeds national quality standards, and its success come from strong local roots and a clear alignment with community.
Going to tender will likely hand the lease to a large provider meaning we'll lose all of this. We urge Wollongong Council to halt the current tender process and prioritise a solution that preserves the current management and community-focused ethos.
The future of our children’s early education and the character of our town depends on it.
Please sign the petition to stop the Stanwell Park Preschool lease tender now.
