Protect Our Children: Keep Sex Offenders Away from Schools

Protect Our Children: Keep Sex Offenders Away from Schools
The Issue
Community Petition for Child Safety Near Castleton Elementary School
To:
• The Honorable Governor of New York State
• New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, Sex Offender Registry
We, the undersigned parents, guardians, and residents of Schodack school district, are deeply concerned about the recent placement of a Level 2 sex offender directly across the street from the Castleton Elementary School playground.
This location is frequented daily by hundreds of children, families, and school staff. The presence of an individual with an extensive criminal record, including a sex offense that has classified him as a Level 2 offender, directly adjacent to a schoolyard poses a serious risk to the well-being and peace of mind of our community.
While we understand that the individual is legally permitted to reside at this location, we believe this highlights a dangerous gap in New York State law. Current legislation allows certain offenders to live in immediate proximity to schools and playgrounds once parole or probation is complete. This leaves children vulnerable and families without adequate protections.
We respectfully request:
1. Immediate review of this case and consideration of relocating the individual to a residence at a safe distance from schools, playgrounds, and areas where children gather.
2. Legislative reform to prohibit Level 2 and Level 3 sex offenders from residing within a designated distance of schools, playgrounds, daycare centers, and other child-focused facilities, regardless of parole or probation status.
3. Stronger collaboration between state agencies and local communities to ensure the safety and security of children remain the highest priority.
We urge your offices to act swiftly in addressing this urgent matter. The safety of our children must come before the housing convenience of individuals with a history of sexual offenses.
Sincerely,
The Concerned Parents and Residents of Schodack School District
