My name is Lynda and I am reaching out to share a story that unfortunately reflects a growing danger our children face every day. Recently, my son was involved in a terrifying incident. As he was crossing the street after school near his School , he was struck by a vehicle, despite being inside the designated crosswalk area. Thankfully, he survived without major injuries, but the incident could have had a much grimmer outcome.

This terrifying experience has underscored the urgent need for improved safety measures around our schools in the these areas . I've already appeared on several news outlets and filed complaints with Metro, advocating for more traffic enforcement around our local schools without any significant results. It shouldn't take a serious accident for our voices to be heard.

In many areas surrounding our schools, crosswalks are understaffed with crossing guards, underfunded, and inadequately marked, making them dangerous territories for our children, who should feel safe during their daily commutes to and from school. Every child deserves to be protected from harm, and it is essential that we invest in the necessary safety measures to allow this basic right.

I am calling on local authorities to take immediate action to ensure the safety of children in our community. We are demanding an increase in the number of well-trained crossing guards and a fair salary for them to ensure retention and quality service. Additionally, there should be an upgrade of existing crosswalks with clear signage, flashing lights, or other light safety measures that will alert drivers to be more cautious.

Statistics from the Federal Highway Administration show that improving crosswalk visibility and adding crossing guards significantly reduces pedestrian incidents, particularly involving school children. Our children’s safety should be prioritized, and such evidence-based improvements can and should be implemented immediately.
