Protect Our Children From Adult Content On Nintendo Switch eShop

The Issue

As many of us know, the Nintendo Switch is a widely popular, family-friendly gaming console that provides entertainment to millions of children worldwide. The Nintendo Switch eShop, which serves as the primary marketplace for purchasing games, should therefore uphold the same family-friendly standards. However, it has come to my attention that explicit, adult-themed content is readily available on the eShop, posing a serious concern and issue for parents guardians and children if left unsupervised on the eShop. Specifically, adult content such as hentai (a genre of explicit anime) is increasingly viewable on the Nintendo Switch eShop. This type of content, whether searched intentionally or not, can appear in game thumbnails or suggestions, despite the eShop being marketed as a platform for all ages. The presence of such content is alarming, especially given that the Nintendo Switch boasts over 92 million active users, a significant percentage of whom are children. In 2020, Nintendo reported that more than 50% of their Switch users were under the age of 18, underscoring the importance of safeguarding younger players from inappropriate material.

The presence of explicit adult content on the eShop raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of Nintendo’s current age-gating and parental control systems. While the eShop does offer parental controls that allow users to restrict access to games based on their rating, these controls are far from ideal. First, they require users to download the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app and link it to their Nintendo account, a process that can be inconvenient and cumbersome. Furthermore, the current parental control system is set for the entire console, rather than for individual user profiles, which is problematic for families with multiple users. Parents who wish to restrict access for younger children may find it difficult to balance those restrictions with their own desire for unrestricted access to the eShop.

While parental controls are an important tool, they are not always sufficient to protect young users from encountering adult-themed content. The content filtering options available are not strict enough to fully block explicit genres, such as hentai, from appearing in general browsing or game suggestions. This means that children could inadvertently stumble upon inappropriate material without the knowledge or consent of their parents. Additionally, many users have reported that Nintendo’s parental controls are not as intuitive or user-friendly as those found on other platforms, making it difficult for parents to effectively monitor and limit content.

Given these limitations, it’s clear that the current system requires an urgent overhaul. Nintendo must take greater responsibility in protecting its youngest users by strengthening and streamlining its parental controls and content filtering options. This would ensure a safer, more user-friendly experience for families and restore confidence in the platform as a truly child-friendly space. To ensure a safer environment, the following actions must be taken:

Stricter content moderation: The eShop must implement a more thorough review process to filter out adult-themed content before it is available for purchase or visible to users, regardless of age.

Enhanced parental controls: While the Switch does offer some parental controls, these should be expanded to include more granular filtering options that would prevent adult content from appearing on the eShop entirely.

Age-appropriate content curation: Games should be clearly labeled based on their target audience, with more transparency on content ratings and themes. This would help ensure that children are not accidentally exposed to inappropriate materials while browsing.

Ongoing oversight and monitoring: Nintendo must commit to regularly reviewing and updating its game selection and content policies to stay ahead of trends and maintain a safe platform for families.

In 2020, Nintendo Switch users spent over $1.4 billion on digital games, and with this revenue comes an obligation to ensure that the platform remains safe and family-friendly. As one of the biggest players in the global gaming market, Nintendo has the resources and responsibility to implement these necessary changes to better protect its youngest audience.

Children should be able to browse the Nintendo Switch eShop without fear of being exposed to explicit content unintentionally. We urge Nintendo to prioritize the safety of its younger users by revising their game selection process and tightening their content review procedures.
